KAZAKHSTAN-RUSSIA - the entire CAUCASUS

CAUCASUS

The Caucasus Mountains are high and majestic. They amazed Lermontov with their appearance and continue to amaze to this day.

The Caucasus Mountains are a mountain system located in Eurasia between the Black and Caspian seas. The etymology of the name has not been established. The most famous peaks (such as Elbrus (5642 m) and Kazbek (5033 m)) are covered with eternal snow and glaciers. More than 50 peoples live in the Caucasus: Abkhazians, Avars, Aguls, Adygs (Circassians), Azerbaijanis, Armenians, Balkars, etc., which are designated as Caucasian peoples. They speak Caucasian, Indo-European, and Altai languages. Ethnographically and linguistically, the Caucasus region can be classified as one of the most interesting regions of the world. At the same time, populated areas are sometimes not clearly divided from each other, between different ethnic groups.

Most of the peoples of the North Caucasus are Muslims. Christianity dominates the Transcaucasus - Georgians, Armenians, and most Abkhazians and Ossetians, as well as Russians and Ukrainians, are Orthodox Christians or adherents of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Armenian Church and the Georgian Church are among the oldest Christian churches in the world and play an important role in preserving the national identity of these peoples, who over the past centuries have been under foreign rule (Byzantines, Turks, Persians, Romans, Russians).

On our tours we cover different regions of the Caucasus Mountains, including Dagestan, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Dagestan:

Dagestan — is one of the main tourist pearls of Russia, where you can find almost everything. You can write a lot and for a long time about the sights of Dagestan, but we will highlight the top 5 locations of Dagestan in our subjective opinion.

1.Ekranoplan Lun:

Authors off-road Tour from Kazakhstan to Dagestan WIG Lun|Guide Kazakhstan|Guides Dagestan The Project 903 Lun ekranoplane missile ship was conceived as a powerful and deadly weapon, capable of quickly and suddenly striking, and then just as quickly disappearing from the enemy’s field of view. The reality turned out to be much more disappointing: a lot of design flaws, low maneuverability, difficulty in control, weak defensive potential and banal unprofitability. In total, it was planned to create 8 similar ships, but in the end only one was launched. Classifying the ekranoplane as a ship is not at all wrong, because, despite its similarity with an airplane, it could not fly in the usual sense of the word. Soon after the collapse of the USSR, Lun was mothballed and then completely written off. For a long time, it gathered dust on the territory of the Dagdizel plant in Kaspiysk, and today lies on the coast near Derbent. In the future, it is planned to make the ekranoplan the main exhibit of the Patriot Park in Derbent, but for now this colossus is waiting, resembling a beached whale.

2.Saltinsky waterfall:

Saltinsky Waterfall Authors off-road Tours Kazakhstan-Russia-Dagestan If you are an experienced traveler, then you can hardly be surprised by an ordinary waterfall. But what about an underground waterfall? “You will find one like this on the territory of the Saltinskiy Gorge, a gorge that in itself is a popular natural attraction. This place will be ideal for those who like to explore everything new and unusual, and the unique reliefs and shapes of the rocks will not let you get bored. However, the main attraction of the gorge is the Saltinsky underground waterfall. It has existed for a very long time, because it has already managed to “drill” several holes in the rocks, along the walls of which a water stream now runs. The Saltinsky waterfall reaches its peak power in May-June, when the snow melts and a large amount of precipitation falls. During the same period, the river level in the gorge also rises, so don’t forget your rubber boots.

3.Sulak Canyon:

Sulak Canyon Authors SUV Tours Kazakhstan-Dagestan|Tour from Kazakhstan - Sulak Canyon The length of the Sulak Canyon is 53 km, and the depth in some places reaches 1920 m, which makes it deeper than the famous Grand Canyon in the USA. A huge variety of plants grow in the canyon, and many of the local birds are listed in the Red Book. There is a road along the Sulak Canyon, and along the way you can find many excellent viewing points. One of the best is in the vicinity of the Chirkey hydroelectric station, which in its size completely corresponds to the scale of the Sulak Canyon. The height of the dam is more than 230 meters, which makes it the highest in Russia after the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric station (242 m). The scale of the structure amazes the imagination, and the realization that it was created by human hands sometimes makes your knees tremble.

4.Tobot and Itlyatlyar waterfalls:

Tour Kazakhstan-Tobot Waterfall|Authors program Jeep Tour Kazakhstan-Dagestan Dagestan is famous not only for its underground waterfalls, but also for its above-ground ones. The water flow falls from a height of 100 meters, hitting the earth's surface with noise. To say that this view is mesmerizing is to say nothing: Itlyatlyar once again confirms that you can look at water, like fire, forever. In its prime, you will find the waterfall between May and July, and in winter you will be treated to an equally impressive sight when Itlyatlyar freezes and turns into a giant block of ice. On the opposite side of the plateau is its twin brother - Tobot Falls. He is 30 meters lower than Itlyatlyar, but all of the above also applies to him.

5.Barkhan Sarykum:

Guide - individual Tour program from Kazakhstan to Dagestan Barkhan Sarykum The Sarykum Barkhan, with an area of 1,175 hectares and a maximum height of 262 m, is the largest sand dune in Europe. It was formed because of sand blowing into one place, which took several million years. Sarykum is home to thousands of butterfly species and hundreds of bird species. The surrounding area is home to hedgehogs, badgers, wolves, hares, wolverines, and many other representatives of the animal world. From certain angles you won’t have to look for it for long; Sarykum resembles the Sahara or Gobi deserts. Filmmakers once took advantage of this factor, because it was on the territory of the Dagestan dune that the legendary film “White Sun of the Desert” was filmed in the late sixties.

Georgia:

Georgia — is the next region of the Caucasus, from which I would like to highlight the TOP 5 attractions.

1.Pillar of Katskhi:

Individual off-road tour programs copyright travel from Kazakhstan to Georgia Pillar Katskh Individual programs copyright travel from Kazakhstan to Georgia Pillar Katskh An extraordinary miracle is located in the west of Georgia near the bank of the Kakhskkhura River. A temple was erected at the height of a 40-meter limestone monolith. The ability to carry out work on high rock formations in the distant 6th – 8th centuries is amazing. Before the advent of Christianity, and after the adoption of Orthodoxy, people believed that the pillar brings a person closer to God. Since the invasion of Georgia by Ottoman Turkey, no religious ceremonies were held in the church, and it was abandoned. In the 18th century, Prince Bagrationi made an unsuccessful attempt to climb the mountain, but only in 1944 a group of climbers managed to climb and paved the way for pilgrims. Today, the church has been restored from the ruins of the first building.

2.The city of Sighnaghi (Kakheti):

Individual tours and travels from Kazakhstan to Georgia to the city of Signahs -Keetia Individual tours and travels from Kazakhstan to Georgia to the city of Signahs -Keetia The city of Signahs arose in the 18th century and was then considered the third most fortified in Georgia. It gradually grew, and at the beginning of the 20th century about 17,000 people lived in it. Now the population of the town is not even 2000. For the most part, people come here to feel the atmosphere of a small Georgian town, but there is also something to see here, such as the Sighnaghi fortress and the Church of St. Gevorg. People call Sighnaghi the city of love. There is a legend about the loving artist Niko Pirosmani, who lined the entire square with flowers to please his beloved. It was this story that formed the basis of the song “A Million Roses” by Alla Pugacheva.

3.Cave city of Vardzia:

Authors tours and travel | Tours to Georgia from Kazakhstan to the cave city of Vardia Authors tours and travel | Tours to Georgia from Kazakhstan to the cave city of Vardia The cave city of Vardzia is a monastic medieval complex of the 12th–13th centuries, located on the border with Turkey. 100 km from the city of Borjomi, in the steep Mount Erusheti, almost 600 rooms were cut down, with a total length of about a kilometer. Here were located: refectories, chapels, baths, libraries, cells and premises for other purposes. Eight floors had running water, connecting corridors, and secret passages. The center of the monastery is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has enormous artistic value. Queen Tamara (1156–1205) is considered the founder of Vardzia. The ancient landmark reveals deep layers of history to the current generation.

4.Prometheus Cave:

Travels and copyright tours and programs of Kazakhstan Tours - Georgia in the Prometheus Cave Cave is better known among people as Prometheus Cave. It is 11 km long, but only a small part is open to tourists - a little more than a kilometer. It was discovered quite recently - in 1983. After 2 years, work began on turning the cave into an excursion site, but the collapse of the USSR did not allow the plans to come true. The idea of making Kumistavi a tourist site was returned only in 2007, for which specialists from France were invited. In 2010, on the initiative of the then President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, the cave received the name Prometheus, since, according to legend, the mythical titan was chained in the mountains nearby. A year later, the cave was opened to everyone, the flow of which does not dry up after 10 years.

5.Martvili Canyon and Monastery:

Travels of Kazakhstan-Georgia | Tours to Georgia from Kazakhstan to Canyon Martvili and the Chkondi monastery The canyon near the city of Martvili is a real miracle of nature that arose back in the Mesozoic era. Limestone gorges, among which the Abasha River flows, will not leave any visitor indifferent, and kayaking will give a lot of positive emotions. In a couple of hours, you can fully enjoy the local beauty and noisy waterfalls, and then we recommend going to the Chkondidi Monastery, founded in the 7th century. This monastery is considered one of the main ones in the Megrelia region, and the abbots there were once very influential people in Georgia. In terms of architecture, there is nothing different here from other churches in the country, but the ancient masonry will delight all lovers of antiquity.

Armenia:

The next region of the Caucasus Mountains is – Armenia: Below are the TOP 5 of its attractions.

1.Lake Sevan and Sevanavank Monastery:

Tour to Kazakhstan-Armenia by car|SUV tour to Yerevan from Kazakhstan - Lake Sevan and Sevanavank Monastery|Tours to Armenia from Kazakhstan On our list, Armenia is in third place, but Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the entire Caucasus. This is not only an amazing creation of nature, but also a place where history was made before. A clear confirmation of this is the Sevanavank monastery. Its construction began by Grigor Lusavorich in 305 on the site of a destroyed pagan temple. The heyday of the monastery began in the 7th century, when hundreds of monks came here and began building churches, chapels, cells, etc. Not only novices lived here, but also many Armenian kings, including Ashot II the Iron. One day he gave battle to a large Arab army that landed at the walls of the monastery and won a crushing victory. For a long time, Sevanavank flourished, but from the 16th century it began to gradually decline, until the last monk left it in 1930. The monastery stood idle for several decades until monastic life was revived in it again. The oldest buildings in Sevanavank that have come down to us are the temples of Surb Astvatsatsin and Surb Arakelots of the 4th and 9th centuries, respectively.

2.Yerevan Brandy Factory “Ararat”:

Jeep Tours from Kazakhstan to Armenia by car|Jeep tour to Yerevan from Kazakhstan|Yerevan Ararat Brandy Factory And although cognac was invented in France, Armenia managed to significantly succeed in the production of this popular drink. The production of Armenian cognac began in the 19th century, but it gained worldwide fame and recognition already during the years of the USSR. The leading enterprise for the production of cognac is the Ararat factory in Yerevan, founded in 1887. Its products have always been very popular, so Yerevan cognacs are served in fashionable restaurants around the world. There is even a legend that the favorite cognac of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was the fifty-degree “Dvin” produced in Yerevan. You can see with your own eyes how cognac is made during an excursion, during which you will also attend a tasting and learn from the sommelier how to distinguish a good drink from cheap brandy.

3.Zvartnots Temple:

To Armenia from Kazakhstan|Tours to Zvartnots Temple|Yerevan Zvartnots Temple from Almaty|Jeep tour to Armenia from Kazakhstan Now only ruins remain of the Zvartnots Temple, but in the 7th century this church was one of the most grandiose in Armenia, and also had a great influence on Christian religious architecture. According to historical documents, Zvartnots was built and consecrated in 650 AD. e., and among the guests invited to the grand opening was the Byzantine Emperor Constant II. He was so impressed by the beauty of the temple that he ordered the construction of the same one in Constantinople. Zvartnots was destroyed by an earthquake in the 10th century, after which it was considered lost for several centuries. The temple was discovered during excavations at the beginning of the last century and the first tier was restored as much as possible.

4.Great Cascade:

Tours to Armenia from Kazakhstan-Grand Cascade|Jeep Tours from Kazakhstan to Armenia by car|Tour to Yerevan from Kazakhstan|Grand Cascade The Grand Cascade will probably seem familiar to you, because this architectural and monumental complex is one of the most popular “postcard views” of Yerevan. The Cascade consists of five terraces, on which there are fountains, flower beds, art objects and places for relaxation. In spring and summer, concerts of classical and jazz music are often held here, which invariably attract large audiences. The Cafesjian Art Gallery, located right inside the building, also makes the Grand Cascade a cultural center. It was created by the Armenian American businessman Gerard Cafesjian, and the exhibition included works of famous artists and sculptors of the 20th–21st centuries: Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, John Altoona, etc. What else is there near the Cascade are various cafes and restaurants, where They serve the full range of national dishes of Armenia. In a few years, the Grand Cascade will become even larger, as work is now underway to complete the upper part of the complex, which has remained unfinished since the eighties.

5.Garni Temple and Symphony of Stones:

Jeep Tours to Armenia from Kazakhstan|Tours to
Garni Temple and Symphony of Stones|Yerevan Garni Temple and Symphony of Stones from Almaty|Tour to Armenia from Kazakhstan No matter how old the temples we have already mentioned are, Garni easily defeats them in this competition. Structurally, the building is identical to ancient Greek temples, since the Armenians partially descended from the Greeks and borrowed a lot from them. Garni dates back to the 1st century and was erected during the reign of King Trdat I. Researchers suggest that Mher, the god of light and justice, was worshiped here. The temple stood for quite a long time and was destroyed only in the second half of the 17th century. Fortunately, most of the elements of the structure survived, thanks to which archaeologists were able to almost completely restore Garni. The preservation of the temple is so good that many ancient Greek ruins can only envy. Near the temple there is a gorge of the same name, where you can find a natural monument known as the “Symphony of Stones” or “Stone Organ”. The rocks here consist of smooth hexagonal basalt pillars, clearly reminiscent of organ pipes, which gave rise to the name. Looking at this miracle of nature, it is very difficult to believe that it was not created by human hands.

Azerbaijan:

Azerbaijan is the last in the list of regions of the Caucasus Mountains to present its attractions.Azerbaijan:TOP 5 attractions

1.Old town of Icheri Sheher:

Tours to Azerbaijan from Kazakhstan-Old town of Icheri Shekher|Jeep Tours from Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan by car|Tour to Baku from Kazakhstan|Old town of Icheri Shekher ИIcheri Shekher is known for the fact that the oldest buildings in Baku are located here. A settlement here appeared in ancient times, but Icheri Sheher itself was first mentioned in the 5th century. The next 500 years of the city’s history are still shrouded in mystery, and only a few archaeological finds allow us to learn something about the life of those times. The active development of Icheri Sheher occurred in the 10th–15th centuries, when the construction of fortifications, palaces and mosques began. Architectural monuments have survived to this day in different states: some are in ruins, while others have been preserved in almost their original form. It may take more than one day to explore Icheri Sheher (there are so many historical monuments here), so we will tell you about its most important attractions.

2.Mountain village Lagich:

Jeep Tours Azerbaijan-Baku from Kazakhstan-Almaty|Tours to the Mountain village Lahij|Mountain village Lahij from Almaty|Tour to Azerbaijan from Kazakhstan Getting into the mountain village of Lagich, it’s as if you find yourself in the past: low houses standing on both sides of a narrow cobbled street , local residents riding donkeys, and ubiquitous shopping shops, especially souvenir shops. In them you can buy almost everything, from traditional papas and arkhaluks to huge carpets and jewelry. And yet, first of all, the village of Lahij is famous for its production of copper utensils. Local craftsmen transform sheets of copper into ornate plates, jugs, vases and samovars, and some of Lahij's products are now on display in the Louvre. The traditions and secrets of this craft are passed on from generation to generation, and therefore you can be sure that the dishes you buy will last a long time and will become an excellent decoration for your home and kitchen.

3.Gobustan Reserve:

Tour to Baku from Kazakhstan|Gobustan Reserve Auto Tours Azerbaijan-Baku from Kazakhstan-Almaty|Tours to Gobustan Reserve|Gobustan Reserve from Almaty|Tour to Azerbaijan from Kazakhstan Gobustan, located on the plain south of the Azerbaijani capital, is not only a natural but also an archaeological reserve. Conventionally, the archaeological monuments of this place can be divided into two types: sites of ancient people and rock paintings made by them. The latter are of particular interest, since the age of these images’ ranges from 1 to 15 thousand years. The largest number of drawings occurred in the Bronze Age (IV-II millennium BC), which is why this period was nicknamed “the heyday of the primitive art of Azerbaijan.” The subjects of the drawings are simple and uncomplicated, and often depict scenes of everyday life, hunting, etc. Among all the drawings, an inscription from the end of the 1st century, made in Roman, catches the eye. It indicates that the XII Lightning Legion of the Roman Empire, created by the personal decree of Julius Caesar, once stayed here. Similar monuments of the past are present at every step in the Gobustan Nature Reserve, and therefore it is incredibly interesting to study it.

4. Village Khinalik:

Jeep Tours Azerbaijan-Baku from Kazakhstan-Almaty|Tours to the Village of Khinalik|Village of Khinalik from Almaty|Tour to Azerbaijan from Kazakhstan Village Khinalik The village of Khinalik, at first glance, is not much different from similar settlements in Azerbaijan. However, if you take a closer look, the unique features of this place will immediately begin to catch your eye. To begin with, it is worth noting that Khinalik is located in a mountainous area at an altitude of more than 2 km above sea level. The second feature is that almost the entire population is made up of indigenous people, whose ancestors came here several thousand years ago. Because of this, the village has developed its own cultural traditions, and Khinaluk residents still communicate with each other in the Khinalug language. For the most part, it overlaps with the Azerbaijani language, but at the same time it is not without a number of features. Khinalug is quite difficult to study, since there are 14 cases alone, while in Russian there are only 6. Khinaluk is not just a settlement, but an open-air exhibition, where exhibits include buildings and people who have preserved unique traditions and customs of their ancestors. You can learn about many of them, as well as the history of the village, in the local ethnographic museum, where all the archaeological finds ever made in the territory of Khinalik are collected.

Depending on the season, its shade changes from pale pink to truly scarlet. This color is given to the water by algae and halophilic bacteria that live here in huge numbers. These single-celled organisms love environments with a high salt content, so Lake Masazirgol has become an ideal habitat for them. The salt here literally lies under your feet and also has a soft pink tint. If you or your friends are interested in collecting minerals, then a salt crystal from Masazirgol will be an excellent addition to the collection.
